Abstract

The studies on estimation of salt intake have been conducted in many countries. The 24-hour recall method has been popular for many years, although the method depends on the memory of the respondents. Alternatively, the surveys of 24-hour urinary sodium excretion have been used in very few countries. In this paper, we present the methodology for estimating salt intake using 24-hour urinary, successfully applied in Korea. First of all, it is important to select a representative sample in conducting the study on salt intake. We used the ‘list-assisted random digit dialing (LARDD)’ sample. When the phone number selected from the LARDD frame was a household phone number, only one person aged 20 to 65 was selected among eligible persons who use the phone number. We asked whether the respondent would like to participate in our study. We also added some questions required to adjust weights due to unequal selection probability. The details of how to select a sample, how to collect data, and how to estimate salt intake will be described.
